Caitlin O'Callaghan

Hi, my name is Caitlin, and I am a biomedical engineering student at the University of Waterloo. I love software, biomedical research, running, soccer, and combat sports.

Experience
Facebook
May to September 2021
  • C++
  • MPEG-DASH
  • Low Latency
  • Software Engineering Intern
This summer, I have been working on the VR Video team within Facebook Reality Labs. I implmented low latency DASH (LL-DASH) streaming in Shaka Packager, Google's open sourced media packaging tool. I also added LL-DASH support to Shaka Streamer, a streaming tool that wraps FFMPEG and Shaka Packager. Internally, I was able to productionize and ship the LL-DASH feature on a Facebook product.
    StreamShark
    January to April 2021
  • Java
  • FFMPEG
  • SRT
  • AWS
  • Software Engineering Intern
At StreamShark, I architected and implemented an end-to-end video streaming pipeline that supports live and video-on-demand streaming. The pipeline used only open-sourced software, eliminating paid services and reducing company costs.
    Facebook
    May to September 2020
  • C++
  • CMake
  • Multi-threading
  • Software Engineering Intern
At Facebook, I worked under two teams: FBOSS Network Infrastructure and AR/VR Video Streaming. As a member of the FBOSS team, I coded features for production switches in Facebook's data centers. With the AR/VR department I created, and patented, a system for video encoding with reactive bitrate.
    Airtime
    September to December 2019
  • C++
  • CMake
  • Jenkins
  • Process Synchronization
  • Software Engineering Intern
At Airtime I worked as a member of the media engineering team, focusing on video and audio engineering. I specifically worked on implementing a real-time, objective video quality analysis framework for video streams.
    TribalScale
    January to April 2019
  • React.js
  • Kotlin
  • SpringBoot
  • iOS
  • GraphQL
  • Redux
  • Agile Software Engineering Intern
Practicing agile engineering, test driven development, and pair-programming, I was a member of TribalScale's engineering team. I built a full-stack project management website, created an AmazonTV POC for iHeartRadio.com, and developed a VR iOS application.
    Pathway Commons
    May to August 2018
  • Javascript
  • React.js
  • Node.js
  • Software Development Intern
Pathway Commons serves to represent biological data in a meaningful manner. I created the Enrichment Analysis web application and designed its user interface. The application takes an input of genes and returns a network of relevant pathways. A live production version can be found at PathwayCommons.org.
    Research
    University of Waterloo
    January to December 2018
  • MATLAB
  • Blood Flow
  • I investigated the error in the calculation of oscillatory shear index from Doppler ultrasound readings of blood velocity. For the analysis, I constructed a MATLAB program to estimate wall shear stress in arteries.
    Northwestern University
    August 2016 to April 2017
  • MATLAB
  • Cardiology
  • Heart Failure
  • Within the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, Department of Cardiology, I computationally quantified structural differences between healthy and heart failure induced cardiomyocytes.
    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
    June to August 2016
  • Cell culture
  • Drug development
  • Breast Cancer
  • I investigated the response of drug resistant breast cancer cells to combination therapies, specifically the role of nuclear transport protein XPO1 in Tamoxifen resistance.
    University of Illinois at Chicago
    August 2015 to April 2016
  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Biomaterials
  • My research focused on the improvement of bacterial resistant properties of Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) for dental appliances through polymer surface treatments.
